Abstract
The lunar semidiurnal term L2(p) has been investigated in detail on both a local and planetary basis and was found to be sensitive to the local diffusive character of the lowest layers of the atmosphere. Accordingly it is possible to explain the solar modulation of the M2 pressure tide represented by the lunisolar diurnal term L1(p) and the seasonal behaviour of L2(p) as well as the variation of the phase angle λ1 with altitude.
