Abstract

The monthly variations in the concentrations (ppm) and amounts (kg ha-1) of calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium were measured during the period November 1972 to October 1973 at nine sites within the Inyanga Mountains of northeast Rhodesia. This is an upland area (1800–2200 m) composed largely of granite, though dolerite forms the summits, and is predominantly under tropical montane grassland. Average annual maximum and minimum temperatures at Inyanga village (32° 45' E, 18° 14' S) for the period 1951–61 were 20.3°C and 9.1°C whilst average annual rainfall was 1225 mm.
