Abstract

The origin of the terrestrial and solar magnetic fields is discussed. An original meridional field can by hydrodynamic motion get an east-west component. It is pointed out that this component cannot exceed the order of magnitude of the original field. If it does, the field becomes unstable and an increase of the meridional component is caused. The possibility of finding an amplifying mechanism of this type is considered.
