
The time dependence of reference pressure in limited region available potential energy budget equations
Abstract
In previous papers Smith (1969) and Vincent & Chang (1973) have formulated available potential energy (APE) budget equations in pressure coordinates applicable to fixed and moving systems. A subtle aspect of these formulations is that the Lagrangian derivative of the global reference pressure is zero, dpr/dt = 0.
