Modifications of coastal currents and upwelling by offshore variations in wind stress

Abstract

Bang & Andrews (1974) have observed that the longshore component of wind stress has a significant maximum just offshore of the coast. In this barotropic model it is shown that this distribution of wind stress produces a broader coastal current and a broader region of upwelling than a uniform wind stress. However the net transport in the current depends only on the value of the wind stress at the seaward edge of the shelf boundary layer.
