Abstract
The investigation is of a linear three-dimensional model of the tides in an ocean covering a rotating spherical earth. It differs from the classical problem in that the oscillations are governed essentially by a partial differential equation whose type depends on the period of the oscillation, whereas the classical problem is resolved into the solution of an ordinary differential equation. Results of the two theories are compared at points where this is possible.
