Abstract

We have performed a series of measurements of the vertical flux of water vapour between the planetary boundary layer (PBL) and the free atmosphere. The vertical flux has been calculated in the stable layer at the highest level of the PBL (∼ 1 000 to 1 500 m) thanks to the coefficient of matter transfer (determined by the ThB (Pb-212)) and by the water vapour gradient. We have compared these values with the evapotranspiration in the area of measurement. Significant variations of the flux of water vapour at the top of the PBL have been noticed from day to day. They are mainly due to changes in the specific humidity of the air masses above the PBL. The daily results show the flux through the stable layer cannot be neglected as a mechanism of vertical transport of water vapour.
