Abstract

The equilibrium amplitude to which small unstable perturbations of a two-layer baro-clinic current grow is determined by analytical theory. The range of validity and accuracy of this theory is investigated by comparing the theoretical predictions with more accurate numerical solutions and with laboratory experiments. Reasonably good results are obtained for fairly large values of the “small parameter”ε = (F – Fc)/Fc, where F is the internal Foude number, equal to 4Ω2L2/gΔϱ/ϱ. The theoretical solution is only applicable for parameters for which the final wave state is steady.
