Abstract

Ammonia has been measured under “pure air” conditions applying the Indophenol blue method after Bertheolot. Aircraft-ascents show a remarkable decrease of the NH3-concentration when proceeding from the continent to the ocean. A number of aircraft-ascents were made to investigate the vertical distribution of on NH3 and NH4+ They revealed a sharp decrease of the concentration in the ground layer of the troposphere approaching a constant concentration above 2 km altitude. Winter and summer values at 3 km altitude were around 1 μg/m3 NH3 and 4 μg/m3 NH3 respectively. Some conclusions on the formation of (NH4)2 SO4-aerosols are drawn on the basis of the results obtained.
