Abstract

Conjugate states to a given two-layer flow of stable configuration confied on top and bottom by horizontal walls are studied in detail. There are at most two such states possible from energy considerations. Uniqueness is established by studying the total problem in which the agency responsible for causing shocks is also included. By establishing a suitable correspondence between the rigid top and free surface cases for purely internal shocks, uniqueness of the conjugate state for the latter case is also established.
