Prediction of the solar radiant flux and heating rates in a polluted atmosphere
Abstract
A direct method for the solution of the spherical harmonics approximation to the equation of radiative transfer in an inhomogeneous, absorbing, emitting, non-isotropically scattering plane-parallel atmosphere is presented. The P1 and P3-approximations of the spherical harmonics method are compared with other more detailed methods for determining the solar radiative flux and the flux divergence in an absorbing and scattering atmosphere with an arbitrary phase function. The solar heating rates due to absorption by the pollution aerosols were predicted for a model atmosphere as a function of aerosol composition, concentration distribution, and solar elevation angle. The solar heating rates for nitrogen dioxide, ozone, and sulfur dioxide are also determined. It is found that a small amount of absorbing particles can significantly affect the radiative transfer in the atmosphere.
