Abstract
The results of regular monitoring of air samples for radioactivity at Ibadan for the period July 1966 to February 1967 are presented here. The results show a general increase of atmospheric specific radioactivity and particular periods of high atmospheric specific radioactivity during the Harmattan season. The general increase in atmospheric specific activity is not correlated with nuclear weapons tests and is explained in terms of the enhanced exhalation of emanation from the earth's crust. The prominent peaks of atmospheric specific radioactivity are shown to correlate with severe Harmattan days, characterized by high specific volume of water vapour in the atmosphere. The prominent peaks of atmospheric specific radioactivity during the Harmattan months are attributed to the continental north-easterly winds which transport radioactive dusts from the radioactive fields of Niger Republic and of the plateau regions of Nigeria to the station of observation.
