On the response of the ocean to impulse
Abstract
A preliminary investigation on transitory motions of “inertial” period is made with the help of simple models. The amplitudes of the displacements are evaluated when an initial impulse and a sudden cooling are imposed on a non-homogeneous sea. Then the effects of spatial variations or of lateral boundaries are considered. Allowing for a density stratification, the frequencies and phase dispersions corresponding to the diverse inertial modes are given.
