
The measurement of the solar constant from high altitude balloons

Abstract
The solar constant has been measured by the use of Eppley normal incidence pyrheliometers on three different days at 31 kilometers altitude. After correcting the readings for the remaining 1% of the atmosphere, and the earth-sun distance, a value of 1.912 gm-cal cm−2 min−1 has been determined for the solar constant.
