Abstract
Natural orthogonal functions are applied to the problem of determining the vertical temperature profile from measurements of the Earth's outgoing radiation in the absorption band of CO2. There are examples of solving this problem. Optimal systems of orthogonal functions agreed with statistics of errors of the measurement of the outgoing radiation and with the kernel of the integral equation. Dimension of subspace of solutions having a real sense at a given accuracy of measurements and a number of allowed temperature profiles are found.
