Abstract

Changes in the large scale stratification resulting from non-adiabatic processes within convective clouds are investigated. The changes are considered as a result of net entrainment, a factor which appears highly sensitive to the presence and dynamics of precipitation. It is shown that Cumulus or Cumulonimbus convection can be a selfamplifying process, under certain circumstances, producing an upper, cold-core low pressure center. This process may be a factor in tropical cyclogenesis.
