Eddy vertical transport of latent and sensible heat

Abstract

The result of computations of the vertical transport of latent and sensible heat through the 700 mb surface is discussed. The computations were performed for most of the Northern Hemisphere north of 30°N and for October, 1961. As vertical velocities output data from operational numerical material were used. The total vertical transport through the 700 mb surface turned out to be equivalent to a warming in 24 hours of the layer between 700 mb and 300 (200) mb of 0.4°C at 85°N and 2.6°C at 50°N.
