Energy distribution near jet stream, and associated wave-amplitude relations

Abstract

In a progressive wave system, the meander of the jet-stream axis typically exceeds the amplitude of the streamlines. This feature is shown to be required by both kinematic and energetic considerations. The specific energy (sum of stream function and kinetic energy) varies along the jet-stream axis, being greatest at the troughs and smallest at the ridges, in proportion to the celerity and amplitude of the wave pattern. In a synoptic example, it is demonstrated that the jet-stream axis is essentially advected by the wind in an isentropic surface, with satisfaction of energy requirements. Schematic illustrations are given, of some relationships between the jet-stream axis and the contour field.
