
Atmospheric haze layers and brightness of the horizon
Abstract
The optics of thin, extended haze layers in the atmosphere as viewed in a horizontal plane are investigated. First discussed are the geometry and brightness profile of an isolated layer, taking account of attenuation and different vertical distribution of the particles. The brightness of layers at altitudes of 22 and 3 km, embedded in a slightly turbid atmosphere, is calculated for solar elevation 20°, azimuths 0 and 180°, and wavelength 500 nm. An attempt is made to include multiple scattering. These results are compared with the effect on the brightness of the zenith and on a searchlight beam caused by a layer.
