Abstract

The stability of prognostic schemes obtained by means of the solution of primitive equations is studied. Three possible schemes are examined among which only one scheme is stable in Richtmyer’s sense. The relationship between time step and grid step depends essentially on the least characteristic number λ1 of a matrix A as follows: Δt/Δs ⩽ √6·λ1. The order of the matrix A is equal to the number of levels considered in the prognostic sheme.
