Engineering Purpose: Why Civilian Engineers Choose Military Careers in the Swedish Armed Forces

Abstract

As defence systems grow more complex, military organizations increasingly rely on technical expertise. Little is known, however, about why civilian engineers choose military careers. This study explores the motivations of engineers who recently entered officer roles in the Swedish Armed Forces. Based on nine semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis, three central themes regarding motivation were identified: attraction to advanced military technology, a desire for meaningful contribution, and the pursuit of a dynamic work environment. These motivations reflect a blend of institutional, occupational, and postmodern orientations, suggesting a pragmatic professional identity. The study offers new insights into military motivation and informs recruitment and retention strategies.
