Abstract

This article argues that financial education initiatives should pay closer attention to the role of family in shaping young people’s financial attitudes and behaviour. Based on a nationwide survey conducted in Germany among young people from Generation Z and their parents, it shows that parents remain important discussion partners, advisers and trusted figures in financial matters for many young adults. At the same time, parental capital market experience, financial knowledge and guiding beliefs shape their children’s proximity to capital markets, financial knowledge and investment behaviour. The findings also reveal a pronounced gender investment gap: young women are clearly underrepresented among Generation Z investors and more often report a security-oriented financial upbringing. The article concludes that financial education should make family-based differences in financial experience visible, strengthen financial self-efficacy and be designed in a gender-sensitive way.
