Abstract

One of the most pressing questions of our time: What can be done about rising populism in general and the growing support for populist parties in particular? Five authors explore this question in four articles in this Zeitgespräch. Robert Gold calls for an information offensive, backed by economic expertise, that refutes the false claims of populist campaigns in a way understandable to the general public. Lena Gerling and Thomas Apolte suspect that it is futile to try to eliminate populism, which is why we should instead focus on depriving it of the means to undermine the democratic order. Karen Horn reflects on authoritarian rule and populism from the perspective of three stages in the history of economic ideas. Felix Rösel sees the expansion of visible public infrastructure as the necessary positive narrative to deprive populism of its breeding ground.
