Flexible working hours allow employees to choose their working hours individually within the ranges specified in collective agreements or by law. This principle complements the traditional distinction between full-time and part-time work and increases time sovereignty. Although new laws such as the Brückenteilzeit (bridge part-time) offer more flexibility, their use remains limited. Collective agreements allow for additional options – such as choosing between a pay rise or time off. Flexible working hours call into question collective reductions in working hours, as they allow for individual adjustment, but they pose challenges for companies and trade unions.
