Abstract

This review article describes the relation between corrosionbehaviour of hot-dip galvanized steel in concrete and itsbond-strength. Corrosion behaviour of coated steel is specified on the grounds of previous research studies assessing itsresistance in model pore solutions with pH ranging from 11to 13.5. The reinforcing steel bond strength with concrete andtesting methodology have been described according to theapplicable standards as well as the factors affecting the bondstrength, namely the change of the cement binder porositycaused by evolved hydrogen on the phase interface and theimpact of formed zincates on concrete hardening deceleration.Based on the published results, the bond-strength of bothribbed and plain galvanized rebar was assessed compared tocommon reinforcing steel with uniform superficial geometry.Current opinions on galvanized reinforcement utilisation arebriefly summarized at the end of the paper.
