Abstract

Sacral architecture is an inseparable part of our cultural heritage. For various reasons it is exposed to interventions into its material substance such as extensions, reconstructions or interior modifications. They intervene into disposition, substance, and construction frameworks. During their historical development such interventions often occurred, and we can also see them in the present period. The report is aimed especially at the effect of older and newer matter according to their proportionality, i.e., the substance – space relationship. It also deals with typological aspects of interventions as well as on operation characteristics of new substances. In this sense it offers basic classifications that are illustrated with domestic and foreign examples. It is aimed especially at interventions since the end of the 20th century up to the present time. The current period puts various requirements on sacral buildings that did not seem important in the past. Today, their realization often requires interventions into older structuress. Similarly, after buildings lose their sacral purpose, interventions follow that are related to the adaptation of the buildings for new uses.
