Influence of Operational Parameters on Centrifugal Pump Coupling Loads: A Case Study

Open Access
|May 2026

Abstract

An analysis of the operating dynamics of a centrifugal pump driven by an asynchronous electric motor was conducted using a two-mass torsional model incorporating a reduction element as the pump’s flexible coupling. Three drive loading scenarios were examined: starting the pump with the discharge valve open (case 1), opening the valve on a running pump (case 2), and starting the pump with the valve closed (case 3). It was demonstrated that breaching centrifugal pump operation guidelines substantially impacts component loading, resulting in considerable overloads.
