Abstract

Venous thromboembolism (VTE) with its two forms: deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE) occurs due to interacting genetic and environmental risk factors. The strongest risk factors are major surgery, major trauma and malignancies. Over the last decade many new risk factors for venous thrombosis have been identified. Even risk factors, clinical signs, symptoms and diagnostic methods of venous thromboembolism (VTE) are well known, there are still uncommon scenarios for this disease. This paper includes eight case reports of venous thromboembolism with different etiologies. Ongoing studies in this field are focused on improving diagnostic strategies for suspected venous thrombosis, comparing different direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs), developing safer anticoagulants, and further individualizing approaches for the prevention and management of VTE.
