The Cognitive Architecture of Management in the Age of Generative AI: Neurophysiological Transitions, Metacognitive Shifts, and the Professional Evolution from Creator to Editor
Abstract
The integration of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) into the executive suite represents one of the most profound shifts in human cognition since the industrialization of information. As of 2026, organizational adoption of Large Language Models (LLMs) has reached a critical threshold, with approximately 78% of global enterprises incorporating these tools into at least one primary managerial function.1 This transition is largely driven by a perceived “performance multiplier” effect, where managers report spending 35% to 45% less time on repetitive tasks such as documentation, report drafting, and information synthesis.1 However, the efficiency gains observed in the short term mask a complex restructuring of the neural and metacognitive frameworks that underpin strategic judgment. The transition from ‘creator’—where the individual is the primary source of ideation and structural logic—to ‘editor’— where the individual serves as a supervisor of algorithmic output—is not merely a change in workflow but a fundamental reconfiguration of the human brain’s engagement with professional challenges.2
