How Literature Reflects the Interplay between Generative Artificial Intelligence and Ethics: A Bibliometric Analysis

The purpose of this paper is to perform a bibliometric analysis of the way literature reflects the interplay between ethics and Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI). ChatGPT and other similar applications of GenAI have completely changed their interaction with people using humanlike dialogue and adaptive learning. That leads to an incredible fascination of people to use that power in all kinds of tasks and activities for good or for bad. Computers and GenAI do not think and do not have emotions or ethical principles. People do. Therefore, it is necessary to eliminate or reduce the risks of misusing GenAI by creating specific ethical and legal frameworks in designing, producing, and using it. Ethics should be embedded in all the phases of GenAI creation and application. Therefore, the research question for this paper is how the literature reflects the role of ethics in designing and using GenAI. We performed this analysis using VOSviewer, a specialized software for bibliometric analysis. We used Web of Science (WoS) as the database for literature search, knowing its fundamental role played in academic publishing. Findings reveal a series of clusters which show how ethics is embedded in all aspects of designing and using GenAI.
