Private Pension Funds in the Context of Digital Transformation Cover
Open Access

Abstract

The digitalization of private pension fund management has become increasingly important, both for day-to-day operations and for investment and risk management activities. The pandemic clearly demonstrated the crucial role of IT systems, as they ensured continuity and helped maintain the smooth functioning of operations even under challenging conditions. In the absence of robust technological infrastructure, managing pension funds would be significantly more expensive to manage and could ultimately have a negative impact on returns. This study set out to examine the role of technological development in the management of pension funds in Romania, with empirical findings indicating that assets under management tend to be positively influenced by such advancements. At the same time, while the integration of artificial intelligence can bring considerable benefits, it also introduces new challenges, particularly in relation to personal data protection and cybersecurity. Addressing these issues requires the adoption of appropriate safeguards and best practices to support the long-term sustainability, efficiency, and adaptability of the private pension system.
