Over the past few years, universities have increasingly found themselves at the center of debates around sustainability and technological development. This paper looks at how these institutions contribute to designing and spreading more environmentally responsible AI systems, with particular attention to green algorithms. Based on a selection of real cases and policy frameworks, the article explores how academic projects, often in collaboration with public and private partners, can support energy efficiency in AI, without losing sight of research quality or innovation goals. Rather than offering a purely technical overview, this research reflects universities’ broader organisational role in driving change. In doing so, it suggests several proposals aimed at helping integrate sustainability into AI-related teaching, research, and innovation agendas.
