The Exhausted Self and the Grace of God: Augustine, Total Depravity and Christian Anthropology
Abstract
The doctrine of total depravity offers an account of human brokenness and the need for divine grace. Scripture, Augustine and the Reformed tradition show sin affecting the whole person and salvation beginning with God’s action. In a culture shaped by questions of identity and meaning, the doctrine points beyond human self-repair to the depth of God’s grace and Christian hope.
