Victor Babeș (1854-1926) - A Scientist of European Culture

One hundred years ago, Victor Babeș—an internationally renowned scientist who made significant contributions to the foundations of microbiology—passed away. He discovered numerous microorganisms, some of which bear his name (e.g., Babesia). His publication record is exceptionally extensive, and owing to his broad education, his works appeared in several languages (German, French, Hungarian, as well as Romanian). His father originated from the Banat region, and his mother came from an aristocratic family in Vienna. Babeș was born in Vienna and pursued his studies partly in Budapest and partly in Vienna, where he earned his medical degree. He began his professional career in Budapest and then broadened his expertise at some of the finest institutions of contemporary Europe. He authored fundamental and pioneering bacteriological works in both French and Hungarian. In Budapest, he served as a university professor and hospital director, while in Bucharest—over nearly four decades—he was a distinguished professor at the medical faculty and the visionary head of the national institute for pathological and bacteriological research. His wide-ranging activities also encompassed therapeutic approaches for numerous diseases, and he was a pioneer in introducing the rabies vaccine. During his investigations into microbial antagonism, he also identified the phenomenon of antibiosis. His legacy is preserved in Bucharest by a museum and research institute founded by his son, as well as in the names of universities in Cluj and Timișoara. In Budapest, his work is honoured by a commemorative plaque on the wall of the Semmelweis University Clinic.
