Ethical dilemmas related to the use of new reproductive genetics technologies
Abstract
New reproductive genetic technologies, such as genetic screening based on the analysis of circulating fetal DNA in the mother’s blood, preimplantation genetic diagnosis, and mitochondrial DNA transfer, enable the effective prevention of certain diseases. At the same time, the use of these methods, as well as other modern technologies such as CRISPR/Cas9-based gene editing, opens the way to the deliberate shaping and “design” of human life. As a result, we are confronted with new ethical and social dilemmas. The aim of this paper is to outline the main principles and current applications of these technologies and to formulate the most significant ethical issues associated with their use, in order to identify the most appropriate possible solutions.
