Circular Economy – The Duality Between Obligation and Opportunity in the Context of Sustainable Development

Abstract

The circular economy is an emerging economic model based on the efficient use of resources and the reduction of environmental impact. The paper analyzes the duality between obligation and opportunity, highlighting the fact that this concept is determined both by legislative and environmental constraints and by its potential to generate economic advantages. It starts from the premise that the circular economy is often perceived by organizations as an obligation determined by European and national regulations regarding waste management and the efficient use of resources. However, the same circular economy can constitute a strategic opportunity for innovation, increased economic efficiency, and the strengthening of competitive advantage. Through a conceptual-analytical approach, the paper presents how this duality, “obligation versus opportunity”, influences the process of implementing circular economy principles, concluding that the success of the transition depends on the ability of organizations and authorities to transform legislative constraints into sources of economic and social value.
