Evaluation of corrosion on Czech medieval window panes

Open Access

Abstract

The goal of the study is the research of specimens of window glass dating back to 13 to 15th century, focusing on the evaluation of their corrosion. Significant visual differences among the specimens were observed and are discussed in association with chemical composition of the glass, which is one of the key factors affecting its corrosion resistance. Aside from the thickness, composition and structure of the corrosion layer, corrosion products were characterised using FTIR, SEM/EDS and XRD methods. Last but not least, the paint on the glass and the paint-glass coherence were studied as well. The knowledge gained may appropriately complement the already published information
