  1. [1] A Gesamtkunstwerk is a total work of art which embraces many art forms. It was the aesthetic ideal of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, particularly in the Arts and Crafts tendencies of the period. In architecture, it includes architectural design of a building, together with designs for sculptures, paintworks, accessories, furnishings, and landscape.
