Order and Super-summativity: Mathematics and Psychology

Open Access

Abstract

The 20th century marked a paradigm shift in both mathematics and psychology. Georg Cantor’s Set Theory redefined the concept of infinity, introducing a hierarchy of transfinite numbers and new approaches to understanding infinite totalities. Similarly, Gestalt Psychology revolutionized the study of perception by emphasizing super- summativity and transposability, which highlighting the autonomy of complex structures relative to their components. This article explores the conceptual intersections between these disciplines, focusing on the shared notions of order, structure, and complexity. Integrating these perspectives, it proposes a unified framework in which wholes transcend the sum of their parts.
