Tourism as a local development factor in Fafe Cover

Abstract

The aim of this study is to analyse whether tourism can be considered a factor of local development, taking the municipality of Fafe as a case study. Six semi-structured interviews were conducted with local stakeholders from both public and private sectors involved in tourism, culture, and hospitality, which were recorded for subsequent content analysis and thematic categorisation. A detailed SWOT analysis of the existing tourism potential was carried out, considering the periods 2012–2015 and 2018–2024, allowing for the identification of strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats within the local tourism offerings. The findings highlight the distinctive characteristics of Fafe’s attractions, including its cultural, natural, and gastronomic heritage, such as the renowned Vitela Assada à Moda de Fafe, revealing significant comparative advantages and potential strategies for territorial enhancement. The study’s limitations relate to the small number of interviews and the exclusive focus on the tourism supply side, without addressing the demand perspective. It is concluded that the municipality has implemented strategies to promote the destination; however, clear opportunities exist for further improvement, particularly in diversifying tourism offerings, promoting authentic local products, and implementing innovative digital technologies. These findings contribute to the sustainable development of the region, providing a solid foundation for future research aimed at effectively maximising Fafe’s tourism potential.
