Abstract

A new automatic smoking machine has been tried out for a year, and some new facts concerning the smoking technique have been found. When several cigarettes are smoked simultaneously on a turning device, they burn down to the butt length in about 10 percent less time than cigarettes smoked consecutively one after the other. An electrostatic device precipitates the smoke quantitatively, does not produce more than 0.1 mg of ozone per hour, and has no influence on the burning rate of the cigarette; on the other hand, it delivers slightly less smoke solids than a larger electrostatic unit and than the Cambridge glass-fiber filter. The precipitated smoke solids should not be dried over silica gel, because nicotine losses may occur, but the water content of the smoke should be determined by the method of Karl Fischer. The ratio between the smoke solids soluble in chloroform and the total solids, is significantly dependent on the type of tobacco and, possibly, on the time interval between the puffs. When a filter cigarette is smoked with an interval of 60 seconds, the retention of the filter is slightly more efficient than with an interval of 30 seconds.
