It is with great sadness that we announce the passing away of Dr. Walt Shaw on February 14th 2026. Walt was a visionary leader, and the driving force behind the establishment of BioCosmos.

Walt was born on August 20, 1939, in Canton, Ohio, to Roy Oscar Shaw and Nella Beatrice Kidder. He graduated from Asbury University, where he met his wife, Rowena. He received his graduate degree from Ohio State University, and his PhD in Biochemistry from the University of Alabama.

Walt devoted his career to understanding the complex roles of lipids in biological systems. He was a pioneer whose dedication to scientific rigor and innovation helped advance biomedical discovery around the world. He was best known for his role as the Founder and President of Avanti Polar Lipids, which provided the scientific community with a huge variety of lipids for research. It was impossible to be a lipid biochemist and not to have worked with Avanti at one time or another, so well known were their products.

Walt had a unique skill in engaging people, and believed in giving back to the scientific community. Thus, Walt supported a large number of scientific conferences, and attended many of these conferences as both the ‘face’ of Avanti, but also because he was genuinely interested in the science that was being presented.

Some years ago, when Walt and Rowena sold Avanti to Croda, Walt, in a way that typified his life’s work and goals, decided that he wanted to again give something back to the community that was largely reponsible for his business success. He chose to give back not only to science but also to a number of charitable organizations which were in line with his personal philosophy. Walt and Rowena subsequently established the Walt and Rowena Shaw Foundation. The Foundation supported a conference held in 2022 in northern Israel on the ‘Potential and Limitations of Evolutionary Processes’, and also supported the establishment of BioCosmos, funding the journal in such a way that open access publishing could be offered to authors at no charge for the first ~100 publications. It is entirely due to Walt’s generosity that these words are appearing in this journal, a journal which will forever be associated with Walt’s memory.

On a personal level, Walt became a dear friend, and he will be greatly missed. Our ongoing commitment to this journal will act as a memorial to his well lived and fulfilled life.
