The Evolution of Web Services: History and Systematization

Abstract

The evolution of web services has fundamentally transformed the way software components interact over the Internet. They enable distributed computing, interoperability, and the development of scalable web applications. This article aims to systematically analyse the historical milestones, technical paradigms, and conceptual frameworks that have shaped web service development. The motivation for this study is to provide a comprehensive, structured overview of web service evolution, which is crucial for understanding both legacy integration and contemporary architectural choices. Findings highlight the trajectory from basic data exchange to highly efficient, scalable, and flexible services – providing insights into integration strategies, interoperability models, and service-oriented architectures. The study contributes to the scientific understanding of web service history and offers a conceptual foundation for future implementation-focused research in distributed systems and enterprise application development.
