Elution removes antibodies coating red blood cells and allows for serologic testing of the recovered antibodies. Heat elution may be used in the investigation of ABO hemolytic disease of the fetus and newborn, in the detection of weak A and B antigens in combination with adsorption-elution using polyclonal antibodies, and for the resolution of interfering IgM agglutinating antibodies.
