Abstract

There is increasing recognition of the complex, multidimensional factors shaping United States veterans’ well-being, including identity transitions, purpose, community reintegration, and cumulative exposure to stress and trauma. However, veteran research often remains fragmented across domains, and traditional methodologies may reinforce power differentials or fail to address skepticism toward research engagement and participation. These limitations highlight the need for approaches that more authentically engage veterans and capture the interconnected nature of their lived experiences. This methodology guide advances photovoice as a rigorous, community-engaged methodology for veteran research. Photovoice positions veterans as co-researchers, fostering trust and generating nuanced, contextually grounded data that may not emerge through traditional approaches. Using a qualitative, community-based participatory design, our methodology guide includes the following steps: (1) strategic topic selection, (2) veteran centered feedback loops, (3) formalizing trust, (4) community collaboration and immersion, (5) multi-modal recruitment strategies, (6) study orientation, (7) photo-taking, (8) image-elicited interviews guided by the SHOWeD method, and (9) debriefing and ethical closure. The integration of visual imagery and narrative facilitates rich insights into identity, transition, connection, and purpose. Methodological challenges, including time demands and ethical considerations, are discussed alongside strategies to support rigor. There is tremendous value in using participatory approaches with and alongside veterans, including enhancing engagement, advancing equitable knowledge production, and informing practice, policy, and efforts to bridge the civilian–military divide.
