This special issue of TMG resulted from the online symposium Open Up the Morgue! How Press Photo Archives are Enabling a New History of Photojournalism, which the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam organised on 2 July 2021. The symposium was supported by the Vincent Mentzel Fonds, a Rijksmuseum fund dedicated to researching and presenting the history of photojournalism. The fund is named after the well-known Dutch photojournalist Vincent Mentzel (1945), who has been a great advocate of photojournalism since the early 1970s. In 2011, he transferred a large selection from his oeuvre to the Rijksmuseum.
