Abstract
History has never played a prominent role in Dutch television drama. However, Dutch history has been made visible in many dramas. History as subject matter and history as decor; just two of the ways in which the past appears in Dutch television drama. What other ways are used? And what are the makers trying to do? Is their intention to channel societal developments in the present with this drama, or do they want to present 'Dutchness', expressed in different specific cultural identities? In Looking back with a changing perspective, Sonja de Leeuw gives an overview of twenty years' television drama and history.
