Historische beelden hebben dankzij de moderne media een grotere verspreidingsgraad en de interesse ervoor neemt navenant toe. Wie denkt dat dat louter tot grote tevredenheid heeft geleid bij historici, heeft het mis. Uit conservatieve hoek wordt vaak de klacht gehoord dat die veelheid aan historische informatie een verantwoorde historische beeldvorming onmogelijk dreigt te maken. Uit postmodernistische hoek klinkt het tegenovergestelde. Wie heeft er gelijk?

In film, radio and television alike, history occupies centre stage. Thanks to the modern media, historical images now enjoy wider distribution, and interest in them is increasing with like vigour. But it would be a mistake to think that historians are equally enthusiastic. Complaints are often voiced from conservative quarters that the sheer volume of historical information now available could itself undermine responsible historical perception. The postmodernists contend quite the opposite. Who is right?
