Abstract

Technics as a cultural phenomenon. The transistorradio, Philips and Hilversum in the period 1950-1970

At three levels Onno de Wit analyses the successful introduction and diffusion of the transistorradio in the Netherlands during the period 1950-1970. He scrutinizes the technical innovation, the broadcasting organization and the general social developments. Thanks to the application of the transistor, Philips was able to tap a new market, and a new radio culture came into being. This development fit the radio programming, that in its turn closely related with the increasing social importance of pop music, especially in the youth culture. The equal disposal and purpose of these developments caused a co-evolution: ultimately a new technical and social configuration came out.
