Since the advance of the Internet and CD-ROM, everyone knows the advantages and imperfections of search engines. Accessing the worldwide digital archive still leaves a lot to be desired. Where there are currently problems making texts available to users, the automatic description and accessibility of audio-visual material is far more complex. Annemieke de Jong of the Computerisation and Digitalisation project team of the Netherlands Audio-Visual Archive answers the question of whether software can replace the documentalist.
